Criteria for Institutional Membership
1. Through the Director of Training, or his/her designated representative, any doctoral-level training program in counseling psychology is eligible for Council membership.
2. A "doctoral-level training program in counseling psychology" is defined as: a. any APA accredited (full, provisional, or probationary) counseling psychology training program, or b. any self-defined counseling psychology training program having a required curriculum largely consistent with APA accreditation requirements and standards.
3. The following criteria will be considered by the Board when reviewing training programs for institutional membership in the Council under section 2.b. a. whether the program is offered in an institution of higher education accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies recognized by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation (COPA). b. whether the program, wherever it may be administratively housed, is clearly and publicly identified and labeled as a counseling psychology program and having as its intent the preparation of counseling psychologists c. whether the program includes an integrated, organized plan of study and ensures a breadth of exposure to the field of psychology d. whether the program includes supervised practicum, internship, and field or laboratory training appropriate to the practice of counseling psychology e. whether there is an identifiable counseling psychology faculty f. whether the program has an identified body of students who are matriculated in that program for a degree g. whether the program evidences a deliberate effort to develop students' knowledge and skill relevant to human diversity (e.g., persons with handicapping conditions, of differing ages, gender, ethnic and racial backgrounds, religions, and lifestyles, and differing social and individual backgrounds) h. whether the program requires instruction in: (1) scientific and professional ethics and standards (2) research design and methodology (3) statistics (4) psychological measurement (5) history and systems of psychology i. whether the program requires students to demonstrate competency in: (1) biological bases of behavior(e.g., physiological psychology, comparative psychology, neurology, psychopharmacology, sensation) (2) cognitive-affective bases of behavior (e.g., learning, motivation, perception, cognition, thinking, memory, emotion) (3) social bases of behavior (e.g., social psychology; cultural, ethnic, and group processes; sex roles; organizational and systems theory) (4) individual behavior (e.g., personality theory, human development, individual differences, abnormal psychology) [Competency may be demonstrated by: (a) passing a suitable comprehensive examination in each of the above areas, or (b) successful completion of 3 graduate semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) in each area, or (c) other suitable means which are documented by the program.] j. whether the program requires training in content specific to the specialty of counseling psychology (e.g., career development and vocational psychology, psychological assessment and psychodiagnosis, intervention procedures, consultation) k. whether the program requires completion of independent scholarly work representing a contribution to knowledge (e.g., dissertation) l. whether the program faculty evidence continued involvement in teaching, research, and supervision m. whether the faculty's education and training is in the specialty area of counseling psychology n. whether the faculty evidence an identification with and professional involvement in counseling psychology
4. Programs wishing to be considered for institutional membership in the Council should submit to the Chair of the Council, through their Director of Training, any and all documentation relevant to the above criteria. Program descriptions, copies of materials sent to prospective students, copies of university catalogs containing program descriptions and degree requirements, course listings and descriptions, and faculty listings and current vitae would be helpful to the Board in reviewing programs for membership on the Council.
5. Applications for membership in the Council will be reviewed by the Board at its annual midwinter and August meetings.
6. Membership on the Council does not constitute APA accreditation status or its equivalent and should not be offered as certification or documentation of program quality.
