Membership Criteria Public Comment
Dear CCPTP Members:
The Executive Board is suggesting several revisions to the membership criteria. There are three primary changes. The first change requires institutional members to be accredited programs rather than accredited or offering training that is consistent with accreditation guidelines. The board chose to change this requirement in light of the on-going discussion of APA accreditation being the minimum standards set by the profession for demonstrating adequate preparation of psychologists. The logical extension of this argument is that internship sites, APPIC, and licensure boards look for accreditation as a sign of quality. If CCPTP focuses on accreditation as a criterion for membership, then we also appear more credible in terms of quality control and consistency with APA standards. This position is also consistent with that held by CUDCP. Please note that current member programs that are not yet accredited, but already have institutional membership status, will retain that status.
The second change provides greater clarity for the informational member category. This category was poorly defined in the previous version of the membership criteria. The Board is suggesting using this membership status as a way to encourage the development of additional accredited counseling psychology programs.
The third change more clearly specifies who is eligible for individual membership and encourages faculty of member programs to become individual members. The Board felt broadening this membership category could aid in the transition of new training directors (since they would already be knowledgeable about the issues being discussed) and also encourage all faculty in Counseling Psychology programs to stay abreast of current training issues. Opening this membership category to other Counseling Psychologists who are interested in training, but not currently affiliated with member programs, could also increase the number of individuals involved in advocacy for the field and provide opportunities for the inclusion of perspectives from individuals serving in a variety of training roles.
Since the membership criteria are part of the organization’s Articles of Association, proposed changes must be made public to the membership and then changes must be voted on. We are using this page to post the proposed changes and provide opportunities for public comment on the changes. The public comment period will last until April 20, 2009. Click the links on the right to access the document containing the changes to the membership criteria and the forum for providing public comment on the changes. When you submit a comment on the forum, there is a place for a “Submission Validation Question.” You are provided with a simple math problem and need to type in the correct answer. This is a function of the network platform – not my idea!!! (But don’t worry, there are no reports generated regarding incorrect answers). Thank you.
